The White House Defends $400 Billion Student Debt Transfer Ahead of Supreme Court Ruling

The White House is standing firm on its $400 billion student debt transfer program, despite the looming possibility of a Supreme Court ruling that could strike it down. President Joe Biden initially pledged to transfer up to $20,000 worth of student loans per borrower, but the program has faced legal challenges since the midterm elections and may face termination by the end of this month.

Bidenomics: Shaking Off Low Marks on the Economy

During a press conference on Tuesday, reporters questioned the Biden administration about its plan for student loans and what message it had for borrowers anxiously awaiting potential debt relief. Olivia Dalton, the principal deputy press secretary, made her first appearance at the podium and responded, “[Our message is] that President Biden has fought for you every step of the way. The student debt relief plan he announced provides much-needed breathing room for millions of student borrowers who are burdened by overwhelming debt in the aftermath of the pandemic.”

Dalton then shifted blame onto Republicans and “special interests” for challenging the legality of the program. She stated, “We witnessed their attempts to undermine this program through legislation that the president had to veto. We also saw them take the issue to the highest court in the land, attempting to strip away student debt relief from millions of borrowers who desperately needed it.”

The Supreme Court heard arguments on this matter in February, and some justices expressed skepticism about the program, which could potentially cost up to $1 trillion. The court has been releasing rulings throughout the month, reserving this particular case for the end of its calendar.

The White House has consistently maintained that it does not have a backup plan if the program is invalidated by the Supreme Court.
