White House denounces Biden impeachment report: ‘Failed stunt’

The White House denounced the House GOP’s 291-page impeachment report into President Joe Biden, calling the yearlong investigation into corruption allegations a waste of time and money.

The report, released Monday morning, concluded that the president’s family and business associates raked in more than $27 million through foreign business deals. But the trio of committees leading the investigation stopped short of recommending that the House move forward with a vote to impeach Biden, who is no longer seeking a second term in the White House.

“House Republicans have finally given up on their wild goose chase,” Sharon Yang, the White House spokeswoman for oversight investigations, said in a statement. “This failed stunt will only be remembered for how it became an embarrassment that their own members distanced themselves from as they only managed to turn up evidence that refuted their false and baseless conspiracy theories.”

House Republicans argued in the report that Biden committed impeachable offenses, attempting to tie him to the conduct of his son Hunter and brother James while he was vice president. But Democrats dismissed the inquiry as a partisan exercise meant to hurt the president politically.

The investigation had lost steam in the face of resistance from centrist House Republicans who feared the evidence gathered by the committees was not conclusive. Yang’s statement called the report a failure and urged Congress to move on.

“The American people deserve more from House Republicans, and perhaps now they will finally join President Biden in focusing on the real issues that American families actually care about,” she said.

The House Oversight, Ways and Means, and Judiciary committees, which have led the inquiry, said that after more than two dozen interviews, six hearings, and a review of millions of pages of documents, they found that the Biden family participated in a “global influence peddling racket” with Biden’s “full knowledge and cooperation.”

The report was released on the same day Biden will give his speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where the party has convened to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement.
