White House clarifies Biden’s facial marks during reporter meeting.
The White House Reveals the Cause of Marks on President Biden’s Face
The White House responded to a reporter’s question about marks that were seen on President Joe Biden’s face, revealing that they were caused by a machine used to treat sleep apnea.
White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates informed news outlets on Wednesday that Biden has sleep apnea and is using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to address it.
“Since 2008, the president has disclosed his history with sleep apnea in thorough medical reports. He used a CPAP machine last night, which is common for people with that history,” Bates said.
Based on his statement, it’s not clear how long Biden has been using the device, although anonymous sources have indicated that he has been using it for several weeks. The Epoch Times has reached out to the White House for comment.
In 2019, Biden’s doctor released a health document stating that the then-Democratic candidate and former vice president has been dealing with sleep apnea for years. The document mentioned that his symptoms have significantly improved after sinus and nasal passage surgeries.
Sleep Apnea and CPAP Treatment
Sleep apnea, a common condition in the United States, is characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep. According to the American Medical Association and other health groups, approximately 30 million people in the United States have sleep apnea.
CPAP machines are a common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. They deliver constant and steady air pressure through a hose connected to a mask or nosepiece, helping individuals breathe while they sleep. Some common issues associated with CPAP treatment include a leaky mask, difficulty falling asleep, a stuffy nose, and a dry mouth.
While sleep apnea can cause snoring and daytime fatigue, it can also lead to high blood pressure or heart problems. The most common form of sleep apnea occurs when the throat muscles relax, obstructing the flow of air into the lungs. Age is one of several factors that increase the risk of developing sleep apnea.
Age Concerns?
Despite the prevalence of sleep apnea, concerns about Biden’s health have been growing among American voters, particularly due to his age. A recent ABC News poll suggested that an increasing number of U.S. voters believe Biden may be too old or unfit to serve as president. Additionally, right-leaning media outlets often highlight perceived unusual statements or actions by the president in public.
Biden, at age 80, is the oldest person to serve as president. Both his age and health have been subjects of scrutiny as he seeks a second term in the 2024 election. If reelected, Biden would be 86 years old upon leaving office in January 2029.
In February, Biden’s doctor declared him healthy and “fit for duty” after a physical examination. While sleep apnea was not mentioned in the doctor’s report, it did note that Biden has dealt with sinus congestion for most of his life, and that his sinus symptoms have improved.
