White House invokes Trump and Reagan to attack McCarthy’s debt ‘brinkmanship’
Prior to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy‘s’s ( R – CA ) Monday speech in New York, the Biden White House launched a new line of debt limit attacks against House Republicans.
In the midst of a heated debate over the debt limit with President Joe Biden, McCarthy is scheduled to present the GOP’s’s funding ideas.
IF MCCARTHY CAN’T DELIVER ON DEBT, IT MAKES NO SENSE WHAT HAPPENS IN THE PAST.
White House officials claim that McCarthy and Republicans are also endangering the” efficiency and trust” of U.S. credit months before this summer’s’s deadline by refusing to tackle the debt ceiling without obtaining spending concessions from Democrats. However, they have failed to consider specific cuts.
White House assistant press secretary Andrew Bates stated in a statement on Monday morning that there is only one reliable way to address the balance limits: swiftly, without brinksmanship or prisoner choosing, as Republicans did three times during the previous administration and as Presidents Trump and Reagan argued for in office. ” Speaker McCarthy is threatening our business and the retirement of hardworking Americans by holding the full faith and credit of the United States surety.”
The speech by McCarthy, according to Bates,” isn’t a plan, but it’s’s clear that extreme MAGA Republicans’ wish lists will impose devastating cuts on hardworking families, send manufacturing overseas, take healthcare and food assistance away from millions of people, and increase energy costs— all while adding trillions to the debt with tax cuts skewed toward the super-rich and corporations.”
The White House has cited former Presidents Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan as warnings against balance ceiling” brinkmanship” while also pointing out how Democrats collaborated with Republicans to increase the debt limit during the previous leadership.
Bates cited Trump’s’s comments from 2019 about collaborating with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and then-Senior Minority Leader Chuck Schumer( D-NY ) to avoid a debt showdown.
Trump said at the time,” I can’t fathom anyone ever actually considering using the debt ceiling as a negotiating hammer.” Did anyone ever use that to deal with, I asked Sen. Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. They responded,” Certainly neither.” That’s’s a revered aspect of our nation.
Debt” brinkmanship threatens the recipients of government bonds and those who rely on Social Security and veterans benefits ,” Reagan asserted in a 1987 television name.
