White House Rejects China-Brokered Ceasefire In Ukraine
The Biden administration reacted against China’s request for a ceasefire during the conflict in Ukraine. They stated Thursday that Russia would benefit from a pause in fighting.
Chinese President Xi Jinping plans to meet with Volodymyr Zelesky, Ukrainian President, in an effort to broker a deal between the two countries. They have been at war since Russia invaded Ukraine over a year ago. John Kirby, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, told reporters that the administration believes that a ceasefire against Ukraine would be successful.
“While that sounds perfectly reasonable and it sounds like a good thing, a ceasefire right now would basically ratify Russia’s conquest. Russia would basically be free to use that ceasefire to further entrench its positions in Ukraine, to rebuild their forces, refit them, re-man them, retrain them so that they can then restart attacks at a time of their choosing.”

Kirby indicated that the White House supports talks among Xi, Zelensky, but cautioned Beijing against taking a stance in favor of Russia.
Xi will visit Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelensky was also reported to have been contacted by the Chinese leader. However, details were not clear. Qin Gang, China’s Foreign Minister, called Dmytro Kuleba his Ukrainian counterpart in a telephone conversation on Thursday.
Rishi Sunak, spokesperson for the United Kingdom Prime Minister, did not reject a ceasefire but reiterated Kirby’s position that any peace agreement must not favor Russia.
“If China wants to play a genuine role in restoring sovereignty to Ukraine then we would obviously welcome that,” The spokesperson stated. “We’re clear that any peace deal which is not predicated on Ukraine’s sovereignty and self-determination is not a peace deal at all. So we will continue to call on China, as we have done before, to join other countries across the world in calling on Putin to withdraw his troops.”
Over a year, the United Kingdom, the European Union and Biden have been arming Ukraine as war ravages Eastern Europe. So far, the U.S. has committed over $100 billion to Ukraine in humanitarian and military aid. According to estimates, each side has witnessed more than 100,000 deaths and millions of people fleeing Ukraine.
