White House downplays potential Garland impeachment as voters’ secondary concern.
White House Press Secretary: McCarthy’s Threat to Impeach Attorney General Seen as Distraction
During Monday’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s threat to impeach Attorney General Merrick Garland, suggesting that it would be viewed as a distraction by voters.
McCarthy had stated on Sunday that House Republicans could move forward with a motion to impeach Garland over allegations made by a whistleblower regarding the Biden administration’s alleged interference in the investigation into Hunter Biden’s misdemeanor tax evasion charges.
Last week, House Republicans released a transcript from a whistleblower who claimed that Garland had denied a request to appoint U.S. attorney David Weiss as special counsel in the Hunter Biden case, which would have granted him greater investigative powers.
“If it comes true what the IRS whistleblower is saying, we’re going to start impeachment inquiries on the attorney general,” McCarthy said.
In response to McCarthy’s comments, Jean-Pierre emphasized that President Joe Biden’s focus is on improving the economy, which she described as the core priority for the American public.
“This is not the main priority of American families. They want us to come together in a bipartisan way to work on the things that they truly care about,” Jean-Pierre stated. “They want us to come together in a bipartisan way to deliver, to build on the successes that this president has achieved in the last two years.”
