White House science adviser emphasizes Biden’s strong focus on AI and its risks.

President Biden’s Focus on Artificial Intelligence

One of President Joe Biden’s leading science and technology advisers said he is “laser ⁤focused” on⁣ artificial intelligence and its possible dangers.

White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar stated in an interview on Monday that she has had multiple conversations with Biden about AI, ⁣including the implications ⁤of the technology.⁣ These conversations coincided with a rising public interest in the technology and its capabilities. Biden has recently implemented several ‍new policies related to⁣ AI, ‌including curbs on China’s access⁢ to the technology, guardrails for how to train and develop AI, and agreements with‍ developers to design the technology ethically.

Understanding the Consequences and Implications

“I’ve had the great privilege ‍of ⁤talking with him several times about artificial⁤ intelligence,” Prabhakar‌ told the Associated Press.⁢ “Those are great conversations because he’s laser focused on understanding what it is and⁢ how people are using ‌it. ⁣Then, immediately, he just goes⁤ to the consequences and deep implications.”

Prabhakar appeared skeptical of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) desire to make AI explainable, noting the technology is “opaque” and “black box in⁢ nature.” She advocated the equivalent⁢ of clinical⁤ trials for the⁣ software,‍ stating‌ they’re not⁢ going to have‍ “perfect measures” but that they can get to a point at which they can ensure enough‍ safety and effectiveness to get value out of the product. Schumer released a proposed framework for AI legislation and organized several Senate-only briefing sessions to help his fellow senators understand the⁣ technology.

Praise ‍for American Companies

The OSTP director also ⁢praised the seven companies that agreed to‌ adopt voluntary AI safety ‍standards set by the White House, noting how thankful⁤ she was that ‌”so many of the companies that are driving AI technology today are American companies.”

Biden issued an executive order in‌ early August ‍that will curb⁤ future U.S. investments in foreign companies developing the tools required for AI, quantum technology, and highly advanced semiconductors.
