Senators to receive classified AI briefing from White House.
The White House and U.S. Senators to Review Highly Classified Information on Artificial Intelligence
The White House and U.S. senators are set to delve into the world of artificial intelligence (AI) this week, as they review highly classified information on the emerging technology. This groundbreaking event marks the first-ever classified Senate briefing on AI, scheduled to take place on Tuesday at 3 p.m. within a sensitive compartmented information facility in the Capitol.
“Our job as legislators is to listen to the experts and learn as much as we can so we can translate these ideas into legislative action, with our committees continuing to serve as the key drivers. I look forward to hearing from these experts and I encourage you to attend,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
The closed meeting, organized by Schumer and other senators, aims to gain insights into the utilization and investment of AI for national security purposes, as well as to understand the AI strategies employed by potential adversaries. The White House team leading the briefing includes Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar, and National Geospatial Intelligence Agency Director Trey Whitworth.
This move by Schumer comes in response to the growing concerns surrounding AI’s impact on national security. Last month, he unveiled a comprehensive five-point framework to expedite the development of AI-related legislation. However, Congress has yet to reach a consensus on AI regulation.
Continued Deliberations on AI Regulation
The Senate reconvened on Monday after a two-week recess, with the AI briefing serving as a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by this transformative technology.
