White House Won’t Say Whether Biden Supports Gun Confiscation
The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, declined to confirm or deny whether President Joe Biden would support gun confiscation through his proposed “assault weapons” ban at a press briefing on March 29.
This comes just two days after a shooting at a Christian school in Tennessee. A 28-year-old woman killed three adults and three children before being shot and killed by police.
When asked about the possibility of Biden supporting the mandatory confiscation of millions of Americans’ firearms, Jean-Pierre did not provide a direct answer.
“Does the president support not just banning the sale and the manufacture of semiautomatic weapons, but further than that, confiscation?” a reporter asked.
“Let me just be very clear, what we’re talking about. AR-15s, this assault weapons ban, they are weapons of war,” Jean-Pierre replied.
The AR-15 is a civilian firearm that is a semiautomatic version of rifles used by the U.S. military.
“There’s only so much he can do, and so now it’s time for Congress to do the work. And he’s happy to sign- once that happens, he’s happy to sign that legislation that says, ‘OK, we’re going to remove assault weapons. We’re going to have an assault weapons ban’,” she added.
When the same reporter raised concerns by Republican lawmakers about the large number of semiautomatic rifles in American homes, Jean-Pierre criticized Republicans, saying that “Republicans in Congress need to look in the mirror.”
