Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan is facing criticism from Catholic groups for a social media video in which she appears to mock the Eucharist. The Catholic League also condemned the video’s content, stating that Whitmer’s actions were unacceptable and amounted to political suicide. The video is intended to promote the CHIPS Act, highlighting its importance for U.S. tech and manufacturing.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) is under fire from Catholic groups that accused her of mocking the Eucharist in a new social media video posted by influencer Liz Plank.
The video shows Whitmer feeding a Dorito to a kneeling Plank while the governor wears a Harris-Walz camo campaign hat.
“How else can this be interpreted other than mockery of Catholics and the sacrament of Holy Communion, not to mention the distasteful pornographic innuendo?” the right-leaning Catholic advocacy group CatholicVote wrote in a post on X. “Gretchen Whitmer is only the latest example of the gross anti-Catholic bigotry festering inside the Democratic Party.”
The group later called for an apology from Whitmer.
“Any slight mockery of another faith would be met with outrage, and an immediate apology would be issued,” the group said. “Why hasn’t she done that yet?”

Another group, the Catholic League, called the video “anti-Catholic bigotry.”
“What Whitmer did was to deride Holy Communion,” Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, said in a statement. “There is no wiggle room for her to deny the obvious. … What Whitmer did is political suicide.”
The video is captioned: “If he won’t, Gretchen Whitmer will. Chips aren’t just delicious, the CHIPS Act is a game-changer for U.S. tech and manufacturing, boosting domestic production of semiconductors to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers,” Plank wrote. “Donald Trump would put that at risk.”
Whitmer was on an episode of Chip Chat called “Gretchen Whitmer Wants To Meet Her Kidnappers” with Plank on her YouTube channel. Plank used to be an MSNBC columnist.
The episode begins with Plank jokingly asking Whitmer if she wants a “post-birth abortion” after her daughters leave their cups lying around, eliciting a laugh from Whitmer, who said, “There’s no such thing.” She rejected a common talking point from Trump, who has said Democrats support abortion after birth.
CatholicVote also criticized Whitmer for her abortion statement, saying, “Gretchen Whitmer laughs about giving her daughters a ‘post-birth abortion,’ then claims it doesn’t exist.”
Plank also asked about the kidnapping plot and how Democrats plan to reach men this election cycle.
“There were 14 people out of 330 million in this country,” Whitmer said. “There were 14 who decided they wanted to kidnap and kill the governor who told them to wear a mask. I want to understand what was really going on there.”
The governor also remarked that the Democratic Party “has work to do” to make sure it is connecting “with people where they are” in the “manosphere or wherever it is.”
The Washington Examiner reached out to Whitmer’s office for comment but did not receive a response.
