Whitmer’s video, uploaded to X, marks the latest attempt by the Democratic Party to reach the young voter bloc. In the video, the Michigan governor said Harris’s campaign volunteers are “cooking with gas,” and Harris is “giving the next president.”

Both Harris and Trump are seeking to win over voters between the ages of 18 and 29 in this election. However, they are using different tactics. 

Harris’s bid for the youth vote largely involves campaigning on abortion access, a topic that is expected to play a big role in this election cycle due to it being the first presidential election since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. 

Meanwhile, Trump’s bid for young voters has largely been focused on winning over young men. The former president has appeared on podcasts hosted by Lex Fridman and WWE wrestler Logan Paul. The former president also started a TikTok account earlier this year, about four years after he attempted to ban the platform from the United States.

Earlier this month, polling data from the Cook Political Report found Harris holds a 54.4%- 39.7% advantage over Trump among voters ages 18-29. Her lead with the youth voters, however, is smaller than President Joe Biden’s, who won the youth vote in the 2020 election.

A new New York Times/Siena College poll released Monday showed Trump leading Harris in Arizona, 50% to 45%, Georgia, 49% to 45%, and North Carolina, 49% to 47%.
