Whoopi Goldberg says she is ‘working-class’ person living through ‘hard’ time – Washington Examiner
Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of “The View,” recently expressed her identification as a working-class individual, stating that she continues to co-host the show because she cannot afford to stop working financially. During a discussion about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s social media post regarding public perceptions of Donald Trump and political outsiders, Goldberg emphasized the struggles of everyday people, including herself. She noted that if she were financially secure, she would not be present on the show, highlighting her dedication to supporting her family. Goldberg’s remarks reflect her connection to working-class concerns and the reality many face.
Whoopi Goldberg says she is ‘working-class’ person living through ‘hard’ time
The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg said she is part of the working class on Tuesday, adding that she would not be co-hosting the talk show if she could financially afford not to.
Goldberg and her fellow co-hosts discussed a recent social media post from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) asking people why they chose to vote for President-elect Donald Trump, in which she received responses calling both her and Trump “outsiders” from the establishment of Washington, D.C., who care about “the working class.” Co-host Ana Navarro suggested the next Democratic presidential candidate needs to make a name for himself or herself before running to gain recognition among voters. Goldberg then contended that Trump had been running “for 12 years.”
“I appreciate that people are having a hard time. Me too, I work for a living,” Goldberg said. “If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here. OK? So, I’m a working person, and my kid has to feed her family, and my great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family.”
The co-host’s net worth is estimated to be $60 million. Additionally, her annual salary for co-hosting the show was reported in 2016 to be around $5 million to $6 million.
Goldberg contended that while she is aware “it’s hard out there,” most voters opted to ignore issues outside of their financial security. She added that something “bothering everybody” should not be prioritized over issues “that put 85% of other people in danger.”
Prior to Goldberg’s claim that she is part of the working class, co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin praised Ocasio-Cortez’s offer to hear from others why they chose to support Trump. She also suggested that voters who have financially struggled became annoyed at politicians insisting the economy was better off under President Joe Biden and, therefore, opted to support Trump despite thinking “he’s a jerk.”
