Why Gen Z Conservatives Prefer Unconventional Political Outsiders
Generation Z’s Political Vision: A Shift Towards Tradition
A recent poll from Harvard University’s Institute of Politics revealed that Generation Z, voters born after 1996, are showing little enthusiasm for a Trump-Biden rematch in the upcoming presidential contest. Surprisingly, less than 50 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds are committed to voting in the 2024 election. With younger generations turning to third-party candidates or opting out altogether, it’s crucial to understand the mindset of Gen Z and their political outlook.
The emergence of a right-wing political ethos among Gen Z can be seen as a response to the overwhelming dominance of liberal ideals in various aspects of life.
“Having been born in 1997, I just made the cut as a Gen Z’er. And as a former leftist, I grew up idolizing Barack Obama. He was cool. He made pithy jokes about Republicans and went on late-night TV. I was raised on ‘The Daily Show’ and ‘Parks and Rec,’ which taught me that the party of conservative fundamentalists and fat cats solidifies itself in resentment against the party of the young progressive visionary.”
However, my perspective shifted during college when I decided to listen to conservative commentary directly from the source. This led to a collapse of my entire worldview, causing me to question my attachment to leftist politics and even my atheism. I had been convinced that progressivism was inevitable, but for the first time, I began to doubt that assumption.
2016 Outsiders on the Right and Left
The political revolution I was part of reached its peak with Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign. Sanders garnered significant support from Gen Z and younger Millennials, thanks to his bold, leftist policies addressing social justice, climate change, and income inequality. His authenticity and candidness resonated strongly with young voters.
Similarly, Donald Trump’s popularity among young Republicans reflected a desire for change and a rejection of establishment politics. Trump’s outsider status, promise to “drain the swamp,” and entertaining debate performances appealed to disillusioned young conservatives.
Adoration of the Animated and the Radical
The rise of more boisterous figures in American politics can be attributed to two factors prevalent among Gen Z. Firstly, fewer than one in three Gen Z’ers believe that civic engagement includes active participation in the political process, leading to a greater susceptibility to radical content on social media. Secondly, the shift from television to social media as a primary source of political consumption has created opportunities for lively politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Vivek Ramaswamy to capture the attention of young Americans.
These animated and radical political figures fulfill a desire for entertaining politics and a longing for profound change in our modern world. Additionally, politically engaged young conservatives seek grounding in principles that acknowledge societal decay, making them receptive to politicians who challenge the established social order.
Gen Z conservatives have come to view embracing tradition as the new punk rock within our nihilistic culture. They recognize the importance of esteemed values and find joy in upholding them. As yesterday’s political consensus fades away, a new conservative vision rooted in tradition is taking its place.
How has exposure to different perspectives on the internet and social media influenced young people’s political beliefs?
The Appeal of Tradition
It seems that I was not alone in this shift. Many members of Generation Z are starting to question the dominant liberal narrative and are turning towards more conservative ideas and values. This can be seen in the rise of right-wing political figures and movements among young people. So why is there a shift towards tradition among Generation Z? One possible explanation is the desire for stability and certainty in an ever-changing world. With the rise of globalization and technological advancements, young people are experiencing a sense of displacement and uncertainty about their future. Traditional values and institutions provide a sense of security and familiarity in the midst of this uncertainty. Moreover, the internet and social media have exposed young people to a wide range of perspectives and ideologies. This has allowed them to critically examine the dominant liberal ideals and question whether they align with their own values and beliefs. The desire for intellectual honesty and diversity of thought has led many Gen Z individuals to explore conservative ideas and engage with conservative voices. Another factor contributing to Generation Z’s shift towards tradition is the backlash against the excesses of progressive culture. While the push for social justice and equality is important and necessary, many young people feel that certain elements of the progressive movement have gone too far. The rise of cancel culture, for example, has led to a stifling of free speech and a fear of expressing dissenting opinions. This has created a climate of political correctness and self-censorship among young people, which goes against the principles of open dialogue and intellectual freedom. Additionally, the emphasis on identity politics and the labeling of individuals based on their race, gender, or sexual orientation has led to a polarization of society. Many young people feel that these divisive tactics are counterproductive and hinder genuine progress towards equality and understanding. It is clear that Generation Z’s political vision is undergoing a significant shift towards tradition. Young people are seeking stability, intellectual honesty, and an open dialogue that allows for a diversity of ideas. As the future leaders of our society, it is important to understand and engage with their perspectives, even if they may differ from our own. Ultimately, the political landscape is constantly evolving, and it is up to each generation to shape the future. By fostering a respectful and inclusive dialogue, we can work towards finding common ground and building a society that addresses the concerns and aspirations of all generations. As Generation Z continues to develop their political outlook, it will be interesting to see how their values and beliefs shape the future of our society. Perhaps this shift towards tradition will lead to a more balanced and nuanced approach to politics, one that incorporates the wisdom of the past while embracing the possibilities of the future.A Shift in Cultural Attitudes
