Wimbledon 2023: Oil protesters disrupt match

Activists Disrupt Wimbledon Match to Protest Oil

Two passionate activists from the environmental group, Just Stop Oil, made a bold statement during the third day of Wimbledon 2023. They halted a match in the prestigious tennis championships, demanding immediate action against the oil industry.

The disruption occurred during the intense match between Sho Shimabukuro and Grigor Dimitrov. Former teacher Deborah Wilde, 68, and retired musician Simon Milner-Edwards, 66, took credit for the protest. In a powerful statement, they called on the UK government to cease all new licenses and consents for oil, gas, and coal.

“In normal circumstances, this sort of disruption would be entirely unacceptable, but these aren’t normal circumstances,” Wilde passionately expressed. “This is a crisis, and it requires an urgent response. I want a safe future, not just for my grandchildren, but for all children worldwide and future generations.”

Photos and videos of the incident quickly spread on social media, capturing the activists throwing orange confetti and jigsaw pieces onto the grass. Security officers swiftly removed them from the court, restoring order.

“I’m here for my grandchildren and everybody else’s,” Milner-Edwards emphasized. “I refuse to let our politicians destroy everything and burden the next generation with the consequences. While I don’t want to spoil people’s enjoyment of Wimbledon, this is a battle between humanity and the destructive forces of oil and gas, and the umpire is making all the wrong calls.”

The group revealed that since launching their campaign on February 14, 2022, there have been 2,200 arrests and 138 individuals imprisoned. Their unwavering dedication to the cause is evident.

It is clear that these activists are willing to go to great lengths to protect the planet and secure a sustainable future for all. Their disruptive actions at Wimbledon serve as a powerful reminder that urgent action is needed to combat the harmful effects of the oil industry.
