Gov. Tony Evers (D-Wis.) is receiving backlash for reissuing a statewide mask order. The Wisconsin governor issued the order on Thursday, defying the Republican-controlled Legislature’s vote to repeal his previous mandate to wear face coverings in public places.

The Wisconsin State Assembly released a statement, saying Evers has abused his limited authority for far too long by repeatedly issuing unlawful orders.

Evers said his first priority is to keep people safe.

“We know that wearing face coverings can save lives and prevent death,” Evers stated. “We know it’s supported by science and the CDC.”

State Sen. Steve Nass (R-Wis.) is drafting another resolution to repeal the governor’s new order. He is also considering asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to take emergency action.
