Wisconsin GOP faces $4M hurdle in impeaching liberal Supreme Court justice.

Wisconsin Democrats Launch ‍$4 Million ⁣Defense Effort‌ to Protect State Supreme ⁤Court Justice

Republicans Threaten Impeachment Over GOP-Drawn⁢ Legislative Maps Case

Wisconsin Democrats are fighting back against Republicans who are⁤ pressuring liberal state Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz ⁣to recuse herself from a case that could result in the court tossing GOP-drawn legislative maps. In response, the Wisconsin Democratic Party has introduced a ‌$4 million‍ defense effort to target GOP lawmakers.

The ‍state Supreme Court is set to hear two pending redistricting‍ lawsuits, one of which asks ⁤all ⁣132 state lawmakers to be up for election, including ⁤those ⁢not slated to be ⁣on the 2024 ballot. Protasiewicz has ⁤been vocal⁣ about her views⁣ on abortion rights ⁣and ⁣the state’s‌ maps, calling them “rigged” ⁢and ‍demanding a review.

Protasiewicz’s appointment to the court⁢ has been ‍met with controversy, as she feuded with Chief Justice Annette Ziegler and fired the state‌ courts director shortly after taking office. However, the Wisconsin Judicial Commission recently dropped several complaints ‌lodged against her over comments she made during her campaign about voting⁢ maps.

Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos⁢ continues to push for Protasiewicz’s recusal ⁤and questions her acceptance⁤ of ⁤$10 million in campaign funds from ‌the Democratic Party, which has a vested interest ⁣in the ⁤redistricting lawsuit. Democrats spent nearly $10 ‌million to elect Protasiewicz ‌in August, flipping the conservative Wisconsin‌ Supreme⁤ Court ⁢for the first time in 15 years.

In response to the impeachment threats, the Assembly Democratic Caucus and the Senate Democratic Caucus have vowed to‌ do everything in their power to prevent this attempt ‍to‍ undermine democracy.⁢ They accuse legislative Republicans of‌ trying to nullify over a million votes and deny Wisconsinites access to reproductive rights.

“Attempting to change ⁣the rules to hold onto power is nothing new for⁤ Speaker Vos and legislative Republicans,” the statement from dozens of lawmakers reads.
