Wisconsin settlement exposes Trump’s bid to overturn 2020 election

Attorneys Settle Lawsuit Over⁢ Fake Electors Scheme

Two attorneys who were involved in a deceptive scheme to create fake electors for ⁣former President Donald Trump following the 2020 election have settled a lawsuit against them. The lawsuit, filed‍ by Wisconsin Democratic electors and a voter, accused attorneys Jim ⁢Troupis and Kenneth Chesebro, along with 10 other Republicans, of⁢ falsely claiming to be electors ‌in multiple states in an attempt to ‍overturn the election‌ results.

The settlement, reached⁣ in ⁢December, required Troupis and Chesebro ⁤to hand over documents, emails, and texts related to the scheme. According to ⁢Mary McCord, an attorney with Georgetown University’s⁣ Institute for Constitutional⁢ Advocacy and Protection, ‌the scheme played a significant role in the events that⁢ led to the violence on January 6th.

The settlement revealed that⁣ false documents⁢ and fake Republican ‍electors were created in ⁣key states to try to keep Trump in office and incite ⁤the Capitol riot. Jeff Mandell, an attorney ⁣for Law Forward, stated that Troupis and Chesebro orchestrated ⁤an unprecedented scheme to‍ undermine the will of the ‍voters.

Emails and text messages exchanged ⁤between Chesebro and Troupis provided evidence of their involvement in ⁣preparing ‌and signing false⁢ elector ‍certificates after President Joe Biden’s victory. The settlement also mentioned a text from Troupis to⁢ Chesebro, where he mentioned sending the memo outlining the scheme to the ⁢White ‍House.

While there is no evidence of direct communication between the attorneys and Trump, public documents indicate that there was an Oval Office meeting at the White House in December. As part of the settlement, Troupis and Chesebro did not admit‍ liability but agreed not to participate as electors in future elections.

Following a recount,‍ Trump lost to Biden by approximately 21,000 votes in Wisconsin.
