Wisconsin voters approve adding ID requirement to state constitution – Washington Examiner
Wisconsin voters have approved an amendment to teh state constitution requiring photo identification for voting, receiving 60.3% of the votes. This decision, made during Tuesday’s election, will solidify existing voter ID laws that have been in place as 2011 and made permanent in 2016, by incorporating them into the constitution. This move is seen as a measure to enhance election security and could limit future legislative changes to the law. The amendment marks a significant Republican victory against the backdrop of a larger election where a liberal justice won a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and a Republican candidate for school superintendent was defeated. President Donald Trump celebrated the amendment’s passage, asserting it would help ensure future Republican victories in the state.
Wisconsin voters approve adding ID requirement to state constitution
Wisconsin voters approved a law that added an amendment to the state constitution that required voters to show photo identification before casting a vote in an election.
The proposed amendment was on the ballot in Tuesday’s election and received 482,591 ballots that supported the measure, or 60.3% of the vote, according to reports. Conversely, 318,236 people, or 39.7% of the vote, were against the amendment.
A law requiring showing ID before voting has existed in the state since 2011. WISN, an ABC affiliate in Wisconsin, reported that it was elevated in 2016 to a permanent implementation. Tuesday’s election made it part of Wisconsin’s constitution, which meant that the law could no longer face legal challenges in the future. It also makes it difficult for a future Democrat-controlled legislature to potentially change the law. Tuesday’s proposal was suggested and placed on the ballot by Wisconsin’s Republican-controlled legislature as a measure to strengthen the state’s election security.
The voter ID amendment was the sole Republican victory in the state’s election on Tuesday after conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court nominee Brad Schimel lost to liberal justice Susan Crawford, 55% to 45%, according to the latest results. A Republican candidate for Wisconsin school superintendent, Brittany Kinser, also lost on Tuesday.
WISCONSIN SUPREME COURT RACE SEES STRONG VOTER TURNOUT AND BALLOT SHORTAGES
President Donald Trump celebrated the passage of the voter ID amendment with a post on his Truth Social account. He called it the biggest Republican victory of the night and said it would presumably prevent cheating and allow Republicans to win in the state for “many years to come.”
“VOTER I.D. JUST APPROVED IN WISCONSIN ELECTION,” Trump posted. “Democrats fought hard against this, presumably so they can CHEAT. This is a BIG WIN FOR REPUBLICANS, MAYBE THE BIGGEST WIN OF THE NIGHT. IT SHOULD ALLOW US TO WIN WISCONSIN, LIKE I JUST DID IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, FOR MANY YEARS TO COME!”
