Hamline University Professor of art history is fired for an absurd reason Based Politics
‘Respect for the observant Muslim students in that classroom should have superseded academic freedom,’ According to the university.
In The latest edition of Campus Insanity. Hamline University just fired an art history professor for… teaching art history. They’re standing By the decision despite widespread scrutiny, too.
Here’s what went down, as originally reported by Reason.
An A professor of art history created a medieval painting depicting the prophet as an adjunct. Muhammad as part of their course material. For Many traditionalists are in this context. Muslims Believe that it is wrong for the image of to be depicted Muhammad. The All students were given a warning by the professor. Students who objected to the image did not have to be present at the time it was shown. NonethelessA student complained that this image was inappropriately displayed. “islamophobic” Administrators were able to reach an agreement. The Professor was fired and the university stated that “respect for the observant Muslim students in that classroom should have superseded academic freedom.”
This. Is. Insane.
It’s not “bigoted” It is a pleasure to see a historical painting, even if it offends a few people. And it’s not “islamophobic” for students to not adhere to the dictates of a religion that they do not believe in. That’s like saying it’s antisemitic for me to eat bacon because orthodox Jewish People with a religious belief cannot eat pork. It’s obviously absurd and not how any of this works. If nobody was allowed to do anything other people’s faiths prohibited, just about everything would be prohibited and no meaningful education or discussion could ever occur.

AndBased on what we know now, Muslim Students Were Respect. They They were notified and given the chance to avoid it. But they don’t have a right to block other students from engaging with art and history simply due to They Personal religious beliefs
You have the right to your religious freedom, absolutely, but you don’t have the right to superimpose it on to other people and silence our freedom of speech. This This is especially true in universities, where there should be an open market for ideas. UnfortunatelyMany of our colleges are open these days. Hamline Evidently, they are failing miserably on this front.
Thankfully, Foundation For Individual Rights And Expression (FIRE). taking action To hold Hamline accountable. While It is a private college, and therefore not subject to the regulations of the First AmendmentIt is an accredited university so it must uphold academic freedom. FIRE filed a complaint with the university’s accreditor. Hamline For failing to live up its obligations and for failing to adhere to its stated values.
Here’s hoping Hamline This grotesque, illiberal attack against academic freedom is being made to the taxpayer.
