The Texas Woman‌ Accused of Killing a Professional Cyclist⁢ Attempts to Escape Custody

The ‍Texas woman accused of killing a professional cyclist and fleeing to ⁢Costa Rica attempted to escape custody on Wednesday, police said.

Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, 35, was taken to a doctor’s appointment‌ by corrections staff when she tried to escape, ⁣CNN⁢ reported.

“As she and two corrections officers were exiting ‍the medical building after the appointment, Armstrong ran,” Travis County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Drew Knight said. “The officers pursued her on foot for approximately 10 minutes without ever losing sight of ‌her.”

Armstrong was captured and taken to the hospital before being returned to sheriff’s office custody.

Armstrong’s trial is set to begin on October 30.

Love Triangle Gone Wrong

She ⁣is accused of⁣ shooting Anna Moriah “Mo” Wilson in Austin, ⁤Texas, in ⁢May 2022 as part of a ⁢love triangle gone⁣ wrong. U.S. Marshals, working with Homeland Security Investigations, learned that Armstrong boarded a flight in New Jersey by using a fraudulent passport ⁢and landed in Costa Rica on May 18 – one week‌ after Wilson was ‍murdered and one ‍day after an arrest warrant ⁢was issued for Armstrong, NBC News reported.

“The Marshals Service elevated the Kaitlin Armstrong investigation ‍to major case status early in this investigation, which likely played a key role in her capture after a 43-day run,” Susan Pamerleau, marshal for the‍ Western District of Texas, said in a statement to The Boston Globe. “This is an example of combining the resources of local, state, federal and international authorities ‍to apprehend a violent fugitive, bring an end to that run and hopefully a sense of closure to the victim’s family.”

A Tragic Loss

Wilson, who was 25‍ at the‌ time of her killing, ⁢was a mountain biking⁣ and gravel racer ⁣who won⁢ multiple races, even resigning from her position at a bike company to‌ compete full-time.

Armstrong is suspected of killing Wilson because they ⁣were both romantically connected ‌to the same man, professional ⁤cyclist Colin Strickland. Strickland‌ and Armstrong dated for three years before taking a break. During that time, Strickland began‌ to see Wilson. The relationship lasted just a few weeks, and Strickland and Armstrong got back together a month later.

In January,⁣ Armstrong learned ⁢about Strickland’s relationship with Wilson and “became furious and was shaking in anger,” a friend of Armstrong told ⁤NBC.

An affidavit filed in ‍relation to the federal case against Armstrong described evidence that Armstrong had allegedly committed the murder.

“According to a witness, Armstrong expressed a desire to kill [Wilson] in January 2022, based on a personal grievance ‍toward [Wilson],” the affidavit said, according to the Globe. “A surveillance camera recorded what appears to be Armstrong’s vehicle near the scene of [Wilson’s] murder at the approximate time the⁤ murder occurred.”

The filing also said that a pistol belonging to Armstrong ⁢had been retrieved from her home during a search‍ and that “Laboratory test-firing of Armstrong’s‌ pistol confirmed that it fired ⁣the spent shell ‍casings that [Austin police] found at the scene of the murder.”

A Desperate⁤ Escape

Police quickly honed in on Armstrong and brought her in for questioning. Days later, on May 14, Armstrong flew from Austin, Texas, where Wilson was⁤ killed, ⁢to Houston, and then from Houston to LaGuardia Airport in New ⁤York. ⁤From there she traveled to Newark‌ Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and then flew to San Jose, Costa ⁣Rica. A homicide warrant for Armstrong’s arrest was‍ issued on May 18, the day she flew to⁣ Costa Rica. On May⁢ 25, a federal warrant charged her with unlawful flight‌ to avoid prosecution.

Armstrong was found at a‍ hostel in Santa Teresa Beach in Provincia de Puntarenas, the Globe reported.

Ntically involved with the same person. The love triangle took⁣ a deadly turn, resulting ⁢in‌ the tragic⁢ loss of Wilson’s life.

The details of ⁤the crime reveal a chilling sequence of ‍events. Armstrong allegedly shot Wilson‌ in Austin, Texas, in May 2022. Shortly after the murder, authorities issued an arrest warrant for Armstrong. However, she managed to evade capture and⁤ fled the country‍ using a fraudulent passport.

It was through the joint efforts⁤ of the U.S. Marshals and Homeland Security Investigations that Armstrong’s case was elevated⁤ to major status. This elevated⁢ status, ⁤along with the collaboration of local, state, federal, and⁣ international authorities, eventually led to her capture. After evading law‌ enforcement for 43 days, Armstrong was ⁢apprehended in Costa Rica.

Susan Pamerleau, ‌marshal for the Western District of Texas, expressed the significance of Armstrong’s capture in bringing closure to the victim’s family. The combined resources and efforts of various law enforcement agencies were instrumental in ending Armstrong’s run and ensuring the pursuit of justice.

The‌ trial of⁢ Kaitlin Marie Armstrong is scheduled to begin on October 30, where she will face charges for the alleged murder of Anna Moriah “Mo” Wilson. Wilson, only ‌25 at the time ‍of her death, was an accomplished mountain biking and ⁢gravel racer who had decided to compete professionally. Her dedication to the sport was evident as she resigned from her position ‍at a bike company to pursue racing full-time.

The loss of Wilson’s life highlights the devastating consequences‌ that can result from unresolved conflicts and jealousy. This tragic event ⁤serves as a reminder of the importance of healthy‌ communication and conflict resolution in relationships.

As Armstrong attempts to⁤ escape custody during a doctor’s appointment, it underscores the necessity‍ of stringent security measures in such situations. The quick response of corrections officers ensured that Armstrong’s escape attempt was promptly thwarted.

The accused killer’s desperate bid for freedom may reveal her apprehension about the upcoming trial and potential consequences she may face. However, it is essential to remember that justice must be served, and the trial will provide an opportunity for all parties involved to present ⁤their case and seek closure.
