A daring act unfolded at a Target store when a woman set a fire in an attempt to steal baby formula, as reported by the Buena Park Police Department.
The incident occurred on September 5th, around 7:15 p.m., at a Target store located on 7530 Orangethorpe Avenue. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Cynthia Torres, was apprehended on Tuesday.
Witnesses recounted how the fire rapidly spread through the children’s clothing section, even reaching the store’s ceiling. Target employees managed to extinguish most of the flames before authorities arrived.
Authorities estimated that the fire caused approximately $500,000 in structural damage and around $1 million in retail losses, primarily due to smoke and water damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although shoppers experienced heavy smoke throughout the building.
Investigators have confirmed that the arson was a diversionary tactic employed by Torres to facilitate her theft of baby formula.
Torres is currently held at the Orange County jail on $250,000 bail, according to jail records.
