Woman guilty of torturing and abusing children in Orange County.
SANTA ANA Woman Convicted of Torturing and Abusing Children
In a shocking case that has left the community reeling, a 34-year-old woman, Mayra Corina Chavez, was found guilty on October 11 of torturing and malnourishing her 10-year-old step-daughter, as well as abusing three other children in her family.
The jury convicted Chavez on one count of torture and two counts of child abuse, all felonies, along with a misdemeanor count of simple assault. They also found her guilty of inflicting great bodily injury on the 10-year-old victim, a sentencing enhancement.

Sentencing for Chavez is scheduled for November 3, while her co-defendant and husband, Domingo Flores, will face a separate trial.
The prosecution presented a harrowing case, describing how Chavez subjected her step-daughter to extreme abuse and malnourishment. When the girl was rushed to Children’s Hospital Orange County a year ago, she weighed a shocking 50 pounds, leading medical staff to initially believe she was much younger.
Deputy District Attorney Bethel Cope-Vega revealed that Flores was engaged in a bitter custody battle with his ex-wife, who had filed 35 custody violation reports. The ex-spouse even obtained a restraining order against Chavez. Despite the pleas of Flores’s daughters, who expressed their reluctance to return to Chavez’s home, authorities placed them back with the defendants.
During the trial, one of the girls disclosed to a social worker that her sister, the primary target of the abuse, had her glasses forcefully slapped off her face, resulting in them breaking. However, the social worker, although sensing something was amiss, was unable to take immediate action.
According to the prosecutor, an expert testified that children in such situations often change their stories out of fear. The abuse inflicted on the victim included forcing her to kneel on canned goods and hold weights over her head for extended periods. The torture escalated when the defendants moved to Anaheim.
The girl was subjected to further cruelty, being zip-tied to her bed and later tethered to a TV stand without a pillow or blanket. Her meals were reduced to just oatmeal, and she was forced to eat facing a wall while her siblings dined. The siblings would even ”smell her mouth” to ensure she didn’t consume any additional food.
Describing the girl’s plight, the prosecutor stated, “She becomes a piece of furniture” in the family, silenced and prohibited from speaking. The other siblings, who also suffered abuse, were forced to participate in their sister’s torment, causing them immense mental anguish.
The trial was emotionally charged, with two of the siblings breaking down while testifying. The prosecutor emphasized that they would forever carry the haunting memory of their sister’s suffering and their own involvement in the abuse.
The abuse inflicted on the victim was unimaginable, including paddling in the groin and the insertion of “peppers” into her vagina. The children were withdrawn from school during the pandemic, providing the defendants with more opportunities to subject the girl to further mistreatment.
When a police officer conducted a welfare check on the girl in June 2022, following a relative’s complaint, Chavez attempted to deceive them with what the prosecutor described as “award-winning theatrics.” However, the extent of the girl’s injuries and malnourishment was undeniable.
The victim was severely malnourished, with photos of her resembling autopsy pictures. She had sustained a broken neck and was in septic shock and heart failure. The malnourishment had stunted her brain development, and she required extensive medical intervention, including surgery and months of rehabilitation.
Chavez’s defense attorney argued that the evidence failed to prove that the alleged torture was done for extortion, persuasion, or sadistic purposes. However, the prosecutor countered by highlighting the overwhelming evidence of the girl’s injuries and the testimony of medical professionals.
The trial has shed light on a horrifying case of abuse and has left the community demanding justice for the victims. The sentencing of Chavez will take place next month, while the trial for her husband, Flores, awaits.
How can the community increase awareness and education regarding the signs of child abuse?
The trial also revealed that the family had a history of involvement with child protective services. In fact, a social worker had visited the family’s residence the day before the victim was admitted to the hospital, but no action was taken.
The shocking details of this case have sparked outrage and raised questions about the effectiveness of the child protective services system. Advocates for child welfare argue that this case is a tragic example of the failures within the system to protect vulnerable children.
Furthermore, it highlights the importance of early intervention and following up on reports of abuse. In this case, there were multiple red flags that were not adequately addressed, ultimately resulting in the continued abuse and suffering of these children.
The case has also prompted a broader discussion about the responsibility of neighbors and community members to report suspected child abuse. Many are calling for increased awareness and education regarding the signs of abuse, as well as the importance of reporting any suspicions to the proper authorities.
As the sentencing date approaches, there is hope that justice will be served for the victims in this shocking case. However, it serves as a sobering reminder that child abuse can happen anywhere, even in our own communities.
Efforts must be made to strengthen our child protection systems and ensure that children are given the support and protection they deserve. This includes not only holding abusers accountable but also providing resources and support for the victims and their families.
It is my hope that this case will serve as a wake-up call for our community and lead to meaningful change in how we prevent and address child abuse. We must come together to protect our children and ensure their safety and well-being. No child should ever have to endure the horrors that these children experienced at the hands of their caregivers.
In conclusion, the conviction of Mayra Corina Chavez for torturing and abusing children has sent shockwaves through the Santa Ana community. It has shed light on the failures within the child protective services system and the importance of early intervention and reporting suspected abuse. It is now our responsibility as a community to come together, support the victims, and work towards preventing such tragedies from happening again.
