Woman’s EV catches fire outside her home, turning her morning into a nightmare.
Massachusetts Woman’s Electric Vehicle Engulfed in Flames
A Massachusetts woman had a terrifying wake-up call on Saturday morning when she discovered her electric vehicle in flames in her driveway. The situation could have been much worse if she had parked the car in her garage, according to a firefighter who responded to the incident.
The incident was reported by WCVB-TV. Ann Thomas, the owner of the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt, woke up around 4:15 a.m. to a strange sound. She and her husband went outside to find their car smoking, and moments later, it was completely engulfed in flames.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and successfully extinguished the fire, but it reignited about 30 minutes later. The Wareham Fire Department spent hours at the scene, using 11,000 gallons of water to put out the blaze. Chief John Kelley mentioned that they were fortunate to have recently acquired specialized equipment to handle such situations.
After the fire was finally extinguished, the burned-out vehicle was taken to a nearby junkyard, away from other cars, to prevent any potential re-ignition. Thomas revealed that she was waiting for a new lithium-ion battery as hers had been recalled at the time of the incident.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Thomas expressed her reconsideration of driving another electric vehicle, realizing the potential danger she and her property faced. Chief Kelley also emphasized the challenges of fighting electric vehicle fires and the disastrous consequences that could have occurred if the car had been parked in a garage.
