Woman admits guilt in making fake bomb threat at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Woman Pleads Guilty to Fake Bomb Threat at Boston Children’s Hospital Amid Controversy
A woman, Catherine Leavy, has pleaded guilty to making a fake bomb threat at Boston Children’s Hospital during a time when the hospital was embroiled in a heated controversy surrounding its transgender youth surgery program.
In a press release on Thursday, prosecutors announced that Leavy, 37, admitted to one count of making a false bomb threat and one count of intentionally conveying false or misleading information about a bomb being sent to the hospital.
The incident occurred in August of last year, when Leavy called in the hoax bomb threat. The timing was significant, as Boston Children’s Hospital was facing intense criticism over its transgender youth surgery program. The following month, Leavy was arrested at her home near Springfield and later indicted by a federal grand jury in October.
Leavy is set to be sentenced in March and could face up to 10 years in prison for the false bomb threat, which is the more serious charge. The other charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Both charges also come with three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
Hoax Bomb Threat Triggers Lockdown at Hospital
On August 30 last year, the hospital received a chilling call from an unidentified individual who stated, “There is a bomb on the way to the hospital, you better evacuate everybody, you sickos.”
As a result, the hospital and the surrounding area were placed on lockdown, and a bomb squad was dispatched to the scene. Fortunately, no explosive devices were found.
During her interview with law enforcement, Leavy expressed her disapproval of Boston Children’s Hospital but denied having any intention to actually bomb the facility, according to the Department of Justice.

Last summer, Boston Children’s Hospital, renowned as one of the nation’s top hospitals and affiliated with Harvard Medical School, faced significant backlash over its transgender surgeries offered to children.
Controversy Surrounding Transgender Surgeries for Minors
Boston Children’s Hospital’s Center for Gender Surgery provides chest surgery for girls aged 15 and above who identify as male, with parental consent.
Initially, the hospital’s website had indicated that 17-year-olds could qualify for vaginoplasty surgery, but that information was later removed. The hospital denied ever performing transgender genital surgeries on minors, dismissing it as “misinformation.”
The hospital also offers “gender-affirming hysterectomies” for women aged 18 and older.
In recent years, critics have raised concerns about the long-term effects of gender hormone treatments, puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical procedures, particularly when performed on children.
According to an analysis published in JAMA Network Open, the number of gender surgeries in the U.S. nearly tripled from 2016 to 2019, with approximately 13,000 procedures performed in 2019.
Disturbingly, numerous girls as young as 12 have undergone elective, gender-related double mastectomies to remove their healthy breasts in recent years.
Meanwhile, there has been a surge in youth identifying with new gender identities. As of last year, an estimated 300,000 minors aged 13 to 17 identified as transgender.

Leavy’s actions have been heavily criticized by the hospital and the community. Dr. Adam Wolfberg, president of Boston Children’s Hospital, expressed his disappointment in a statement, saying, “The safety and security of our patients, families, and employees is our top priority. This kind of hoax threat is unacceptable and causes unnecessary fear and disruption.”
Many believe that Leavy’s hoax bomb threat was directly related to the controversy surrounding the hospital’s transgender youth surgery program. The program has been a source of debate, with some arguing that it provides necessary and lifesaving care for transgender youth, while others believe it is unethical and harmful.
According to court documents, Leavy had been posting online about her opposition to the program in the months leading up to the bomb threat. It is unclear whether her views on the program motivated her to make the hoax threat, but the timing suggests a connection.
The case has sparked a larger conversation about the impact of controversy and public opinion on healthcare institutions. Hospitals and medical facilities often find themselves at the center of heated debates over controversial procedures or treatments. This can lead to a volatile environment and put significant strain on the staff and patients of these institutions.
While it is important to have open discussions and debates about healthcare practices, it is equally important to express opinions and concerns in a responsible and lawful manner. Making a false bomb threat is not only illegal but also incredibly dangerous and disruptive.
The aftermath of Leavy’s hoax bomb threat serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a peaceful and respectful dialogue. Disagreements can be addressed through legal and ethical channels, rather than resorting to threats and violence. It is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals involved, including patients, staff, and the community at large.
As the sentencing date approaches, the controversy surrounding Boston Children’s Hospital and its transgender youth surgery program continues. The hospital remains committed to providing quality care to all patients, including transgender youth, while also addressing concerns and criticisms in a thoughtful manner.
Leavy’s guilty plea reminds us all of the consequences that can arise from acting out of anger or frustration. It is a sobering reminder to approach controversial issues with empathy, respect, and a commitment to finding common ground.
In the midst of a heated controversy, the focus should always be on the well-being of those who depend on the services provided by healthcare institutions. It is our collective responsibility to foster a climate of understanding and civility, even when faced with deeply divisive issues.
