Woman Whose Son Was Fatally Stabbed to Testify at GOP’s New York Violent Crime Hearing
GOP’s New York Crime Hearing to Hear from Woman Whose Son Was Fatally Stabbed
The House Judiciary Committee has released the witness list for its GOP-led field hearing that will deliberate on violent crime in New York City. It features a woman whose son was fatally stabbed about five years ago.
The hearing was announced by Republicans last week, largely aimed at discrediting Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s work and undermining his credibility as he prosecutes ex-President Donald Trump on various criminal charges. The line-up of the hearing includes at least three witnesses: the mother of a homicide victim, an anti-crime activist, and a bodega clerk wrongfully charged with murder, according to the Daily Mail.
Madeline Brame will testify before the committee as the chairwoman of the Victim Rights Council, narrating the story of her son Hason Correa, a US Army veteran who was stabbed to death by a group of attackers. Two of the attackers agreed to a plea deal with Manhattan prosecutors, including Bragg, and the third attacker was released on time served.
Brame had earlier accused Bragg of violating her “rights as a crime victim to be fully informed and to be heard,” claiming that she was not informed of the plea deals until they were accepted.
The hearing also includes Jose Alba, who was wrongfully charged with murder after stabbing a man who attacked him in his bodega. He was arrested and sent to Rikers Island but was later cleared after evidence of self-defense emerged.
Jennifer Harrison, the leader of Victim Rights New York and an anti-crime activist in the city for several years, will also testify at the hearing. She has been critical of the city’s criminal justice system for years, especially after her boyfriend and best friend were killed in a double homicide.
The field hearing is scheduled to be held on April 17th and will take place in the district represented by Jerry Nadler.
Democrats on the panel have confirmed that they will attend the hearing as they intend to diminish the event as a political stunt.
The hearing is the latest reactionary move by House Republicans to Bragg’s indictment of Trump, charged with thirty-four counts of falsifying business records just two weeks ago.The Republicans have criticized the charges and vowed to investigate Bragg and his office, claiming that these are politically motivated.
Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have also subpoenaed former New York County Special Assistant District Attorney Mark Pomerantz to testify about his involvement in the Trump investigation. Pomerantz initially led the inquiry before resigning last year after Bragg’s reluctance to proceed with the case.
Last Tuesday, Bragg filed a lawsuit against Jordan, accusing the committee chairman of interfering with a local investigation. Bragg has received several death threats due to Republicans’ attacks and calls Jordan’s actions a “transparent campaign to intimidate and attack” him.
