Advocating for Equality: Empowering Women in Sports
In a recent episode of ”American Thought Leaders,” former University of Pennsylvania swimmer Paula Scanlan discusses the issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
In the interview, Scanlan, who was a teammate of transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, shares her perspective on the need to ban biological men from competing in women’s sports. She explains that she initially chose to remain anonymous when interviewed for the documentary “What is a Woman?” due to fear of speaking out while still a student at UPenn.
However, Scanlan eventually decided to reveal her identity and speak out about her experiences. She emphasizes the importance of standing up for the truth and being willing to put one’s name behind it.
Recognizing the Flaws in NCAA Policies
Scanlan recalls the moment she first learned that a member of the men’s team would be transitioning to the women’s team. Initially, she hoped it wouldn’t come true or that the rules would change. However, in the fall of 2021, she witnessed a member of the men’s team competing on the women’s team and using the women’s locker room.
She explains that she hadn’t heard of any policy changes prior to 2019 and was surprised to discover that the NCAA policies regarding transgender athletes didn’t consider important physiological differences between men and women. As she questioned the fairness of these policies, she faced accusations of transphobia and hate speech.
The Impact on Locker Room Dynamics
Scanlan describes the discomfort experienced by female athletes when sharing locker rooms with transgender athletes. Some teammates resorted to changing in bathroom stalls to maintain their privacy. While some raised concerns with the coaches, they were told that transgender athletes deserved the same privileges as everyone else on the team.
Scanlan acknowledges the consistency of this approach but emphasizes that it is not the right thing for women. She notes that there was little discussion or consideration of the impact on female athletes.
The Dominance of Transgender Athletes in Competition
Scanlan discusses the impact of transgender athletes on competitive swimming. With no swimming competitions during the 2020-2021 school year, the team was unsure of each other’s abilities. However, during their first meet against Columbia, it became evident that Lia Thomas would be a dominant swimmer, outperforming the competition.
The Team’s Reactions and University Response
Scanlan shares the various concerns expressed by her teammates regarding the presence of transgender athletes. Some were primarily concerned about losing their spots on relay teams or having their records overshadowed. However, when Lia broke multiple records in December, it garnered national attention and prompted the university to hold a meeting with the team.
Scanlan concludes her interview by expressing her shock at the lack of expertise and consideration demonstrated by the university during that meeting.
