Women’s soccer league settles with abused players for $5 million
The National Women’s Soccer League gave a $5 million settlement to players for mistreatment by the league.
This follows an investigation dating back to 2022 that found the league, under the umbrella of The United States Soccer Federation, was perpetuating emotional abuse, sexual misconduct, and verbally abusive coaching throughout its league. A subsequent 319-page report found that those accused of misconduct kept their jobs and left players vulnerable to further abuse.
“We remain grateful to the many brave individuals who came forward to share their experiences, which has informed our approach to systemic reform,” NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman said in a statement. Berman became commissioner after the allegations became public.
The funds will go to the players who came forward with their complaints, but not every player involved is known to the public. The settlement will apply to current and past players, who will be given six months to apply for their share.
Among the highest-paid players, annual salaries reach around $500,000. This does not include their endorsement deals, which can fetch much more.
“For too long, the hardworking and talented women of the National Women’s Soccer League were forced to endure an unacceptable culture of abuse, harassment, and retaliation,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement. “This settlement sends a clear message that such misconduct will not be tolerated and ensures players receive the compensation and protections they deserve.”
Five head coaches and the NWSL commissioner resigned at the time of the allegations.
The NWSL began in 2013. There are 14 teams in the league, with two more anticipated in 2026.
