A tragic incident occurred when a worker lost his life due to the collapse of an illegally built home.
City officials in Brooklyn, New York reported that a man tragically lost his life when a two-story home collapsed.
Emergency responders arrived at 1266 50th Street, near 13th Avenue in Borough Park, where they found the 33-year-old construction worker unconscious.
According to officials, the man was working on the house when the basement’s first floor suddenly collapsed, trapping him under the debris.
Assistant Chief Joseph Ferrante described the collapsed floor as a “V shape.”
“The floor collapsed… was in a V shape, the middle of the floor collapsed and came down on top of the victim,” Ferrante said.
Tragically, the worker was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man’s identity has not been released publicly yet, as his family is still being notified of the heartbreaking news.
Reports indicate that the construction site employees claimed they were hired to build a “front-framing Jewish synagogue.”
However, Department of Buildings Commissioner James Oddo revealed that the construction was in violation of a “stop work order” issued on January 4th following a previous complaint.
“This fatality absolutely should not have happened. They should not have been doing this work, let alone having a bobcat inside this structure,” Oddo told reporters at the collapse site. “There could be multiple fines at this location. So the amount may end up in six figures.”
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the building collapse.
