Indian wrestlers reignite protest against federation chief
India’s top wrestlers are back on the streets of New Delhi, demanding justice for several female players who were sexually harassed by Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers have also moved the country’s top court to seek registration of a first information report (FIR) against Singh. This is not the first time the wrestlers have protested against Singh and several coaches. In January, the sports ministry stripped the WFI top brass of all administrative powers and asked an oversight committee to look into the allegations. However, the wrestlers are not backing down this time. “Unless there is some action, unless he’s arrested, we are not going to end our protest,” said Bajrang Punia, who won the men’s freestyle bronze in Tokyo Olympics. Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik also expressed her support for the wrestlers, saying, “We have learnt our lesson and this time we won’t leave until we get justice.”
The sports ministry has asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to form an ad-hoc committee to run the WFI and hold fresh elections within 45 days. The wrestlers have been camping at the protest site since Sunday, seeking support from all athletes and players in the country. Let’s stand with them and demand justice for the victims of sexual harassment in sports.
