X Corp. files lawsuit against non-profit for alleged ‘scare campaign’ targeting advertisers on social media platform: Report.
X Corp. Files Lawsuit Against Non-Profit Organization for Accessing Private Data
X Corp., the social media company formerly known as Twitter, has filed a lawsuit accusing the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), a British non-profit organization, of unlawfully accessing private data. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that the CCDH orchestrated a “scare campaign” to drive away advertisers from the X platform by publishing reports on hate speech.
“CCDH has done this by engaging in a series of unlawful acts designed to improperly gain access to protected X Corp. data, needed by CCDH so that it could cherry-pick from the hundreds of millions of posts made each day on X and falsely claim it had statistical support showing the platform is overwhelmed with harmful content,” the lawsuit reads.
The complaint comes after X attorney Alex Spiro sent a letter threatening legal action against the CCDH last month. Spiro accused the non-profit organization of making baseless claims to harm Twitter’s digital advertising business.
Last month, the CCDH claimed that X failed to act on 99% of “toxic” tweets involving racist, homophobic, neo-Nazi, antisemitic, or conspiracy content. X officials have labeled the report as false, stating that it was based on incorrect and outdated metrics.
Months after purchasing the platform for $44 billion, X CEO Elon Musk announced a decrease in hate speech impressions. However, the CCDH and X continue to clash over the issue.

X is seeking a jury trial and unspecified monetary damages in the lawsuit. The company also wants to block the CCDH and its backers or employees from accessing data provided by X to the social media listening platform Brandwatch.
CCDH founder and chief executive Imran Ahmed criticized Musk’s legal action, stating that it is an attempt to silence those who highlight the toxic content on his platform. Musk has previously expressed his intention to combat content fueled by legacy media outlets and create a common digital town square for healthy debates.
