Xi Hails ‘New Era’ As He Arrives In Moscow In Bid To Broker Ukraine Peace Deal

The Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, has arrived in Moscow on a “mission of peace” to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, amid tightening relations between the two powerful countries. Xi has been trying to negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, despite opposition from the United States. Washington is concerned that any agreement brokered by Beijing would be one-sided, in favor of Russia, which invaded Ukraine over a year ago.

After being greeted by a military band playing the two countries’ anthems, Xi spoke of a “new era” and expressed optimism about his first state visit to Russia since the war began in February 2022. The talks between Xi and Putin are being closely watched by the US and NATO, with Russia touting the visit as evidence of its powerful international alliances, as it has become increasingly isolated from the West.

The US National Security Council spokesman, John Kirby, has expressed concern that a ceasefire called for by Xi would work against Ukraine, and would essentially ratify Russia’s conquest, allowing it to rebuild and further entrench its forces in Ukraine, ready for a future attack.

Xi has also reportedly reached out to the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang has spoken with his Ukrainian counterpart over the phone.

The meeting follows a surprise visit by Putin to Mariupol, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine, where he spoke briefly with supporters.
