Survey: Young people call for Biden to face primary as approval rating drops.
A Majority of Young People Believe President Joe Biden Should Face a Primary Challenge
A new survey conducted by Echelon Insights and commissioned by the Young America’s Foundation (YAF) reveals that the majority of young people are of the opinion that President Joe Biden should face a primary challenge. This sentiment arises as Biden’s popularity among the demographic continues to decline.
The Survey and its Findings
The survey, which involved 1,650 high school and college students, sought their views on various political and social issues. The results indicate that 56% of high schoolers believe Biden should face a serious primary challenge. Among college students, this number rises to 61%. Notably, 68% of liberal high school students and 62% of liberal college students also support the idea of a primary challenge for Biden.
Currently, Biden faces challenges from Marianne Williamson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., with the latter garnering up to 20% support from Democrats in certain polls.
Declining Approval Ratings
The survey reveals a decline in President Biden’s approval ratings among both high school and college students compared to 2021. Among high school students, his approval has dropped from 58% to 33%, while disapproval has risen from 29% to 47%. Similarly, among college students, his approval has decreased from 62% to 38%, and disapproval has increased from 28% to 51%.
Key Issues and Age Restrictions
While the economy remains a top concern for both college and high school students, school safety slightly surpasses economic worries among high schoolers. Race relations, immigration, and political corruption are considered less important issues for both demographics.
Interestingly, both groups express support for implementing a maximum age for presidential candidates. Nearly three-fourths of college students endorse age restrictions, with many suggesting an age range of 60-69 as the maximum for presidential candidates.
Ideological Identification
Among the surveyed students, only 19% of high schoolers and 21% of college students identify as conservative or somewhat conservative. The most common ideological identification for both groups is moderate, with 33% of high school students and 32% of college students falling into this category.
The Importance of Addressing Young Voters’ Concerns
Former Wisconsin governor and current YAF President Scott Walker emphasizes the significance of understanding the concerns of Gen Z voters. He states, “In the leadup to the GOP primary debate, our polling shows Gen Z students across the political spectrum care about a range of important issues – including a candidate’s age and the need to feel safe in their schools. Strikingly though, the top issue among young voters is the economy. Many are concerned they won’t be able to find a job that pays well, start a business, or be able to afford housing when they graduate from college. Everyone in the 2024 race would be wise to focus on the issues that matter to this important voting bloc.”
