YouTube announced several AI-related policy updates in a blog post ⁢ on Tuesday.

The platform stated that creators who fail to disclose their ‌use of ‌AI tools to⁢ create “altered or synthetic” ⁢videos will ⁣face penalties, such as‌ video removal or account suspension from YouTube’s ⁣revenue sharing‌ program.

“Generative‌ AI has the⁣ potential to⁣ unlock creativity on YouTube and transform⁣ the experience for viewers and ⁢creators ‌on ⁢our ⁤platform,” said Jennifer Flannery O’Connor and ⁣Emily Moxley, vice presidents for⁤ product management, in the blog post. “But just as important, these opportunities must be‌ balanced‌ with our responsibility to protect the YouTube community.”

Starting next year,⁤ creators ‍will be required to label AI-produced content, and users ‌will be informed when they are viewing⁢ AI-generated content.

The new rules will apply ⁤to AI-produced or synthetic content that appears ”realistic,” including⁢ videos that⁣ depict events that never happened or⁢ show individuals saying or doing things they didn’t actually do, according to O’Connor and ⁢Moxley.

“This is especially important in cases where the content discusses sensitive topics, such as ⁢elections, ongoing conflicts and public health crises, or public officials,” added O’Connor and Moxley.

Additionally, YouTube will allow users to request the removal of videos that simulate identifiable individuals, including their face or voice.

“Not all content will be removed from YouTube, and we’ll ⁢consider a variety of‌ factors when ⁢evaluating these requests,” stated the company in the blog post. “This could include ⁢whether the‍ content‌ is parody or satire, whether the⁢ person making the request can be uniquely identified, or whether it features a public official or well-known individual, in ‌which case there may be a higher bar.”

Concerns have been raised by digital information integrity officials about the ‌potential increase in misleading content due to generative AI⁤ tools being used on social media and the web.

YouTube emphasized that creators who do not comply ⁤with the new requirements will be held accountable.

The platform also noted ⁣that ⁤AI-generated content that ‍violates ‌its community guidelines will face the same restrictions‍ as other disallowed content. When considering removal ‍requests,⁢ YouTube will take into account factors such ⁤as whether the content is satirical or involves a public figure.

YouTube’s music ⁢partners, including record labels‌ and distributors, will also be able to request ⁣the ⁣removal of⁢ AI-generated music⁣ that imitates ‍specific artists’ voices.
