Zelensky cautions Western leaders about delaying weapons, warns of slower counteroffensive.
Ukrainian President Urges for Swift Counteroffensive
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his concerns about the delayed delivery of weapons from the U.S. and Western leaders, stating that it has slowed down the country’s highly anticipated counteroffensive against Russian forces.
Appeal for Timely Support
In a recent CNN interview, Zelensky emphasized the importance of starting the counteroffensive earlier, highlighting the risks of waiting. He explained, “If we start later, it will go slower. We give our enemy the time and possibility to place more mines and prepare their defensive lines.”
The Ukrainian president expressed gratitude towards the U.S. and European leaders for their support but reiterated his plea for all the necessary weapons and materiel to expedite the counteroffensive.
Weapon Shortages and Russian Obstruction
Zelensky revealed that Russian forces have hindered the progress of the counteroffensive, and part of the blame lies with the Western countries’ decision to withhold certain weapons. He emphasized that without the relevant weapons, his forces are unable to push forward in some areas.
One of the weapons Zelensky specifically mentioned was the Army Tactical Missile System, which the Biden administration has refused to supply due to concerns about Russian escalation. Zelensky argued that these long-range missiles would provide an opportunity to start the counteroffensive in certain directions.
Humanitarian Concerns and the Cost of Delay
Zelensky stressed the inhumanity of sending Ukrainian soldiers to be killed by Russian long-range weapons, emphasizing the urgent need for the necessary equipment. He echoed the sentiment of Ukraine’s top military officer, Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, who stated, “Every day, every meter is given by blood.”
The Ukrainian president also highlighted the importance of the recently agreed-upon long-term plan to provide Ukraine with fourth-generation aircraft and pilot training. While this deal was not intended for the current counteroffensive, Zelensky emphasized that these aircraft would be valuable in the ongoing conflict.
The Reality of War
Despite high expectations for the offensive, Gen. Mark Milley, the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, cautioned that the conflict would be long and bloody. He emphasized the difference between war on paper and real war, stating, “In real war, real people die.”
It is crucial for Ukraine to receive the necessary support and equipment to effectively defend its territory and minimize casualties in this ongoing conflict.
