Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has taken decisive action against corruption within the military recruitment sector. In a meeting with his National Security and Defense Council, Zelenskyy announced the dismissal of all regional military recruitment bosses.
The decision comes in response to numerous corruption allegations that have plagued the recruitment sector. Currently, there are 112 criminal proceedings underway against military recruiting officials, according to President Zelenskyy.
“During the inspection of the territorial recruitment centres, law enforcement agencies exposed cases of corruption,” the presidency said.
The corruption allegations include offenses such as illicit enrichment, money laundering, unlawful benefit, and illegal transportation of individuals liable for military service across the border.
“Every ‘military commissioner’ against whom there is a criminal investigation will be held accountable,” Zelenskyy stated. “Officials who confused their shoulder straps with profit will definitely be brought to justice.”
In response to the corruption scandal, President Zelenskyy has decided to replace the dismissed officials with soldiers who have firsthand experience on the front lines or have been injured in battle. He believes that these individuals can be trusted to rebuild and maintain a corruption-free recruitment system.
“This system should be run by people who know exactly what war is and why cynicism and bribery in times of war constitutes high treason,” he emphasized.
The selection and implementation of the new hires will be overseen by Ukraine’s top general, Valerii Zluzhnyi, and all candidates will undergo thorough vetting by the Security Service of Ukraine.
This move is part of President Zelenskyy’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption within the country since the start of the war in 2022.
